Prelim and Prelim Evaluation

Did you achieve continuity editing and demonstrate match on action, a shot reverse shot and the 180 degree rule?

Unfortunatly, we did not achieve continuity editing. As a result of this we needed to re-film (see question 2). However, we did demonstrate a shot or reverse shot (when using over the shoulder shots), and acheived the 180 degree rule and match on action during the editing process so the footage ran smoothly and was in synch with the sound.

Discuss any mistakes that you made - did you have to re-film anything? If so, why?

When filming we didn't take into account that as the camera panned across the room, the sofa came into the shot - we didn't have Kelly sitting on the sofa for the panning shot so in the next shot she 'magically' appeared on the sofa. So, we had to re-film. Consequently, she had different clothes on as we filmed on seperate days; this was our continuity error.

Explain what you have learnt about:

Camera Setup:

  • I have learnt how to attach the camera to the tripod (using the camera shoe).
  • You need to adjust the tripod if need to be in order to capture the right shot an angle - set up the shot.
  • Before, you shoot you need to put the camera into focus by holding down the shutter lightly until it bleeps and re-focuses.
  • You are now ready to shoot.

Final Cut Express:

  • After you have converted your footage they need to be dragged into the Final Cut software.
  • Start chopping and placing your footage along the timeline, cutting them at the right time to get a smooth transition between shots.
  • If you wish to view your footage it has to be rendered.
  • Add sound on the timeline below.
  • Once finished, render it once more and export it to 'My Document' as an mp4.

Why is it important to follow the set up procedures for storing and saving your work?

In case you want to access your footage at a later date, e.g. to edit. The set up procedure is important if you want to get the best result out of shooting, e.g. storyboarding and the positioning of the camera.

In what do you feel this task has helped prepare you for the main task?

  • We can correctly set up the camera.
  • We know how to operate and how to get the best results out of the SLR cameras (e.g. the ability to shoot in HD).
  • How to edit so we can achieve match on action and correctly flowing footage with sound.
  • It has got us used to working within our groups.

What have you learnt about working in groups and the importance of time management?

When working in a group, you can't leave it all for one person to do; the end result should have everyones input and ideas. You should distribute the roles within the group and play off their strengths. Time management is important because then you can organise when and where you will shoot and how long that will take. Therefore, storyboarding is essential because then you know what shots you need to capture - if you story board, you go into the shoot already knowing what you want, you won't waste time deciding what shots you want. If you organise the shoot, you won't fall behind schedule which means you will have more time during post-production to improve and experiment with the footage to get the best possible final 'creation'.
